Teens Prepare Sushi For the Homeless

You usually hear about sandwiches, blankets, or coats for the homeless, but a group of teens from Larchmont and Mamaroneck decided the homeless deserve a taste of some good sushi as well. So, on Thursday, October 1, they got together, downloaded a video from YouTube titled “How to make a California roll” and got to work.

After two hours of sushi making, some peeling, some cutting and others rolling and packing, they produced seventy-five California rolls packed elegantly with wasabi and ginger in take out containers. The teens then delivered the sushi to be distributed to the homeless through Hope Community Services in New Rochelle.

The sushi event was one of many community service projects planned this year by the teens of Teens for the Community (TFC), a community service program organized by Chabad of Larchmont and Mamaroneck.

TFC kicked off its third year in September and now includes more than fifty teens. The participants, mostly from Mamaroneck High School with a few from private schools, get together each Thursday evening for two hours to do different community service projects.

With winter just around the corner and temperatures quickly dropping, the teens are focusing on those who can use some help bundling up. So tonight, Thursday, October  15, the teens will be making colorful fleece scarves which they will be donating to “My Sisters’ Place” of Westchester County, a shelter for women and children suffering from domestic violence.
